The Tipu Sultan Summer Palace is one of the most visited historic buildings in Bengaluru. Hyder Ali, the de facto ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore started the construction of this summer palace in 1781. His son Tipu Sultan also known as the Tiger of Mysore completed the construction after a decade.
Tipu Sultan Summer Palace
The Tipu Sultan Summer Palace, which is more than two centuries old is made up of wood, stone, and mud. It’s a two-story building sitting on a low platform with the audience chamber in the front and the back. There are 160 pillars some of which reach the upper story. The walls and ceilings were once richly painted with geometric and floral patterns, traces of which are still available.
The Archaeological Survey of India declared this summer palace as a nationally protected monument in 1951.
Tipu Sultan Summer Palace as Tourist Destination
The Tipu Sultan Summer Palace is a tourist destination but you can explore only part of the palace on the ground floor and the first floor. The entrance fee for the summer palace is Rs. 20 for Indians and citizens belonging to SAARC and BIMSTEC countries. Other foreign nationals have to pay Rs. 250.
Contactless Ticketing System
There is no cash transaction at the ticket counter. There’s a QR code placed at the entrance of the Tipu Summer Palace. It is easier if you have the PayTM app on your smartphone to scan and make payments. You can also use the QR code scanner in your smartphone to scan and make payment via other UPI options.
You will need to have any of the below IDs to initiate payment on your smartphone.

- Driving License
- Voter Card
- Others
Note: Visitors without a smartphone may face difficulties entering the Tipu Summer Palace.
Once you make the payment, a QR code will be generated on your smartphone. Show it to the security who will in turn allow you inside the Tipu Sultan Palace.
The Museum
You will get to spend most of the time in the museum on the ground floor. The tiny museum exhibits Tipu’s swords, the tiger toy, paintings of the palace, and some historical information.
Most of the paintings in the museum are of “Summer Palace” from different angles. They are all reprint of the originals created by James Hunter in 1804.
You will also get to read about rocket technology during the Tipu period. The most interesting is the recordings of Tipu’s Dreams. Don’t miss it.
Visiting Days & Hours
The Tipu Summer Palace is open all days of the week except during the government holidays. It is open to visitors from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm.
How to reach
The Tipu Sultan’s Palace is in Chamarajpet near Kalasipalayam. You can easily navigate to the summer palace with the help of a Google map. The pay and park facility is available in the third building from Tipu’s Palace.

Recent News
On 22nd November 2012, workers digging at the Metro Rail site excavated a cannon and a cannonball that belonged to the Tipu Sultan era. A second cannon was discovered a few days later. The site of these discoveries was the City Market Metro Station that was being constructed between Tipu Sultan Summer Palace and the Bangalore Fort.
